ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – Six months after the St. Louis County Council passed a bill that would freeze the property taxes of seniors, no program has launched, and Monday a lawsuit was filed to force the county’s hand.
County administrators said last week the tax freeze hasn’t happened yet because they don’t have enough staff or the proper equipment to handle over potentially 100,000 seniors who want the tax break.
The lawsuit essentially is aiming to force the council’s hand and make them fund the program meant to be needed relief for seniors like Tony Leara.
“I’m being taxed out of my home,” said Leara.
90 years old, has been living on fixed income for decades and his tax bill has more than doubled over 25 years.
“Every two years it goes up, there’s got to be a little release,” said Leara.
He’s now suing St. Louis County because last year, the county passed a program that would freeze his taxes and guarantee his bill doesn’t go up. But that program hasn’t gotten off the ground.
